Three Cumbrian gastropubs have been named among the UK’s top 100 venues.

The prestigious Estrella Damm list for 2026 has been published this week.

The list is voted for by more than 400 industry professionals, including pub owners, chefs, food writers, and critics.

Heft in Newton in Cartmel, is the only Cumbrian pub to feature in the top 50.

It was ranked as number 34 – the same position it had in 2025. It is also the fifth consecutive year the pub has featured in the Top 50.

The Black Bull in Sedbergh and The Dog & Gun in Skelton, near Penrith, were placed at 57 and 73 respectively.

Heft co-owner Nicola Tickle said: “Congratulations to everyone who features in this year’s Top 50 and Top 100 – it’s an incredibly strong list, and we’re very proud to be part of it once again. To be recognised for a fifth consecutive year, and to remain the only Cumbrian pub in the Top 50, really means a great deal to us.

“This recognition belongs entirely to our brilliant team. Their hard work, creativity and commitment are what make Heft what it is, and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.

“From day one, our aim has been to create a place that feels like a true community pub, with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, while also offering food that reflects the quality and care we believe in. To see that approach consistently recognised by our peers in the industry is incredibly rewarding.”

Black Bull co-owner James Ratcliffe said: “The Black Bull is all about delicious food, well-kept beer and quality wines in a building full of character, all while being looked after by a dedicated team who genuinely care about what they do.

“Awards like the UK Top 100 Gastropub Awards are an important benchmark within the industry, especially because the votes are by critics and industry peers, which naturally pushes you to try to keep growing and improving what you do year on year.”
