Cumbrian paper manufacturer James Cropper has reported increased profits and growing revenue.

The firm, based at Burneside, near Kendal, has released its year-end results.

It is celebrating its 180th anniversary and operates across two core divisions, Advanced Materials and Paper & Packaging.

Subject to audit, the group expects to report adjusted EBITDA of £8.8 million, up more than 30% on last year, with revenue rising to around £103 million.

The firm said the performance reflected growth in the Advanced Materials division alongside a much improved year for Paper & Packaging.

It said it had also reduced its net debt to £8.3 million from £12.9 million a year earlier.

James Cropper Advanced Materials develops and manufactures high-performance materials used in specialist markets including aerospace, energy and advanced industrial applications.

Products made in Burneside are supplied globally and are used in technologies ranging from lightweight aircraft components to materials supporting emerging hydrogen and energy systems.

The group’s Paper & Packaging division produces technically advanced paper, packaging and creative materials, serving customers in markets such as luxury packaging, publishing and commercial print.

James Cropper said the division made good progress, significantly reducing losses and returning to EBITDA profitability in the second half of the year, despite the loss of a major merchant customer in 2025.

Early trading in the new financial year has been positive, the company said, and it remained cautiously optimistic despite wider economic uncertainty.

David Stirling, chief executive officer, said: “I am pleased to report a good performance in what remains a cautious and uncertain market environment. We have made structured progress in stabilising the business, which is reflected in the robust EBITDA and cash generated in the year.

“We remain confident in the medium-term outlook and are focused on maintaining a balanced approach, positioning the group to benefit as conditions improve.”
