Kurt Canfield with Business Crack’s Nigel Thompson at Delkia’s offices at Westlakes Science Park.

In the latest edition of Business Crack’s Northern Lights podcast we’ve visited Westlakes Science Park to meet Kurt Canfield, the chief executive officer of defence and nuclear specialists Delkia.

He tells how how, in just a few years, the company has grown to one that’s not only active in this country but now has a presence abroad and is still growing. 20 graduates are currently being recruited as Delkia’s development continues.

‘Stick to what we’re good at and do it well’ is Delkia’s aim he says.

In a wide ranging conversation he also shares his views on new government measures to try and open up specialist markets to more SME’s through the creation of hubs. Kurt and Delkia will be playing a part in the development of the new SME hubs, something he says he’s excited about.

We also discuss how his family are playing a leading role in bringing an iconic Cumbrian brand back to life.

The podcast also features more stories directly from some of the county’s business community as we continue to travel across Cumbria to bring them to you.

On one of the hottest days of the year we went underground to hear how slate from Honister is in demand and see the careful process of extracting it.

The new owners of Hayes Garden Centre in Ambleside talk about the responsibility of managing a site where a garden centre has stood for over 200 years.

The podcast is available on Spotify, Apple, Soundcloud and Youtube
