People have the chance to take a behind-the-scenes tour of three of Cumbria’s leading firms as part of this year’s National Manufacturing Day.

Cumbria Chamber of Commerce is hosting the events on September 26 at Kimberly-Clark in Barrow, McMenon Engineering in Workington and Appleby Creamery.

The chamber said it was an exclusive opportunity to meet the people behind these businesses, view their facilities and learn how their products are manufactured at scale.

Kimberly-Clark

Park Road, Barrow-in-Furness, LA14 4TR

Time: 1.45pm to 4pm

With a passion for creating essentials for a better life for people everywhere Kimberly-Clark was driven to invent these five major consumer product categories: facial tissue, paper towels, toilet paper on a roll, feminine pads and disposable training pants.

Come and see how they have been finding new ways to make people’s lives better since 1872.

Appleby Creamery

Unit 2 Cross Croft, Appleby in Westmorland, CA16 6HX

Times: 9am to 10am or 10.30am to 11.30am

Appleby Creamery produces a wide range of distinctive and characterful cheeses ranging from soft cheeses, such as blue, brie and smoked brie to hard varieties, including cheddar and caerphilly-style cheeses.

To increase their sustainability they have embarked on a project to reduce their reliance on both grid supplied electricity and LPG.

Installing an array of solar panels on the creamery roof that will provide a high percentage of electricity requirements, at peak it will generate 180kW and will be able to export up to 100kW of that green energy to the grid.
