Pupils from Cumwhinton School near Carlisle recently concluded a poster competition to promote student creativity
The competition, held as part of the school’s ongoing expansion project, invited pupils to envision the spirit of designing and building through captivating artwork.
Architects Plus and Cubby Construction have been leading the expansion of the school, enhancing the infrastructure to accommodate the growing needs of its students.
Cumberland Council invested £650,000 for the works, which involved adding an additional classroom and essential ancillary accommodations to the single-storey building.
The construction features a pitched roof, durable concrete tiles, and internal finishes including plasterwork, decoration, and floor finishes. External enhancements and alterations to existing adjacent surfaces have also enhanced the overall functionality and aesthetics of the school environment.
Under the guidance of Architects Plus and Cubby Construction, children were tasked with creating an A4-sized poster that encapsulated the essence of designing and building.
The winning poster and four runners-up were selected by judges from Cubby Construction and Architects Plus, reflecting the vibrant creativity and imagination of the students.
Caitlin Olney, marketing manager at Cubby Construction said: “It’s been a pleasure being involved in this project and providing an opportunity for the children to understand how a project like this works. From the design right through to the build.”
Victoria Wood from Architects Plus said “We were really impressed with the ideas and skills shown by the competition entries from the students. It was really encouraging to see how the themes of inclusion, site safety and the process of designing and constructing the school extension, were all represented in the students’ ideas”.
The winning poster and runners-up were unveiled during a school assembly on Wednesday 17 April, where the winning artist received a prize of art supplies, and the four runners-up each received a £10 book voucher.
The super-sized banner featuring the artwork now adorns the front fence space between the construction site and the school, serving as a source of inspiration and pride for the entire school community.
Jon Stewart, headteacher at Cumwhinton School said: “I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Cubby Construction and Architect Plus for igniting the creative spirit of our pupils through the recent poster competition. Their enthusiastic participation in being part of the designing and construction of their new classroom inspired posters reflects the passion and talent fostered by this initiative.”
